When I walk into a venue on the morning of a wedding, I am not arriving to discover it. I am arriving to inhabit it — because everything I need to know, I have already learned. The couple, the location, the story, the atmosphere we are building toward. None of this happens by chance. It is the result of a preparation process that most couples never see — and that makes everything they do see possible.

Knowing the people before photographing them

The first step is not technical. It is human. Together with the video team, I study the full story of the couple: their personalities, their values, how they relate to each other, everything they have shared through the Right On Target process. That knowledge becomes the compass for the day. I am not arriving to photograph strangers — I am arriving to photograph people I already know, whose story I have already begun to hold.

How we study a venue without visiting it

Many couples assume a photographer needs to visit the venue beforehand to understand where the ceremony will take place, where dinner will be held, where portraits will work best. In practice, for photographers who have worked across a territory for over two decades, that visit is rarely necessary. We know ninety percent of the venues we work in — we have photographed them across different seasons, different light conditions, different times of day.

For venues we haven’t worked in before

When a location is new to us, we study it through detailed visual research — tools that allow us to analyse every space, every orientation, every potential moment before we arrive. And we work through relationships: direct communication with the venue team gives us precise information about the spaces, the timing, the specificities of that structure. By the time we walk in, we already know where we are. That certainty becomes freedom — the freedom to stop thinking about logistics and be completely present to the people.

Why this preparation changes the images

A photographer who arrives unprepared spends mental energy orienting themselves — understanding the spaces, building a strategy on the fly. All of that energy is energy taken away from observation. And observation is the heart of the work.

Someone who arrives prepared has already solved the logistical questions in advance. They can afford to be completely in the moment — reading the light, watching the people, catching what is about to happen a second before it does. That quality of presence is not improvised. It is built in the work that no one sees.
