Many photographers offer them. Many couples request them. The logic is understandable: having in writing every moment you want photographed, with the certainty that nothing will be missed. In theory, it makes sense. In the reality of a wedding day, it rarely works the way anyone expects.

A wedding is not a controlled environment. It is a living event, with its own unpredictable variables — the light shifts, the timeline moves, emotions arrive when least expected and disappear within thirty seconds. Committing to a list of mandatory shots means photographing what was planned, not what is actually happening.

The risk no one mentions

A photographer focused on a list is a photographer looking at the list. Not the room. Not the light. Not the moment beside the expected one — which is often more powerful than the expected one itself. A shot list creates divided attention: between what is written on paper and what is unfolding in front of the lens. And in that gap, the truest images are lost.

What I do instead

My approach is identity-based, not programme-based. Before every wedding, I invest real time in getting to know the couple — their personalities, their values, the specific way they exist together. That knowledge means I arrive at the wedding already knowing who I have in front of me. I am not interpreting the couple at random. I recognise them the moment they reveal themselves.

Every wedding has its own atmosphere — and the images follow it

Some weddings are dynamic and full of energy — friends filling every space, spontaneous moments happening in every corner. The images from those days carry that vitality. Other weddings are intimate and quiet, where the story is told in smaller gestures and private glances. The photographs from those days speak a different emotional language. How can you plan in advance which one it will be, before the day has taken shape?

What builds trust instead of a list

Trust does not come from a document. It comes from being known. When a couple understands how I work — when they have seen the portfolio, recognised a consistency of vision across every image, had a real conversation and felt understood — the list becomes unnecessary. What matters is knowing there is someone in the room who knows how to look. And who will be looking, without interruption, for the entire day.

Choosing to work with me means choosing my vision. Not a list of moments — a presence that knows how to recognise every moment as it arrives.
